The final day of the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast culminated with Taj Burrow (AUS), 33, and four-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 24, taking the respective wins in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at the primary venue of Snapper Rocks.

The opening stop on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast enjoyed sunny weather, light winds and a capacity crowd for the final day of competition, with the world’s best surfers putting on a spectacular display of high-performance surfing.

Burrow defeated dangerous South American Adriano De Souza (BRA), 25, in a Final that came down to the wire. De Souza caught a wave in the dying minutes and launched into a massive air-reverse, requiring a 7.87 out of a possible 10 to take the lead. The judges deliberated until after the siren sounded and when it was announced that De Souza came a mere 0.27 short, Burrow was chaired up the beach and declared the 2012 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast champion.

The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast kicked off the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour with some great performances in shifty three-to-four foot (2 meter) surf at Snapper Rocks.
Kelly Slater (USA), 40, reigning 11 x ASP World Champion and defending event winner, sent a clear message to his fellow competitors by posting a massive 18.80 (out of a possible 20) in the first 10 minutes of his opening heat of 2012.

John John Florence (HAW), 19, fresh from his maiden Vans Triple Crown win, posted the highest heat total of the day, a near perfect 19.60 (out of a possible 20). This is Florence’s first Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and he was the only 2012 rookie to notch a Round 1 win.

SNAPPER ROCKS, Queensland/Australia (Wednesday, March 9, 2011) – Reigning 10-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 39, has secured his 46th elite tour win today, defeating defending event champion Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, to claim the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover.

The opening event of the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast showcased the incredible depth of talent in the current ASP Top 34, but the victory went to the iconic Floridian.

“I’m having a lot of fun,” Slater said. “It’s pretty easy. You go out and surf Snapper by yourself, it’s pretty fun. To get to surf a contest is a bonus. I’d like to thank my girlfriend and everyone at Quiksilver for throwing the event. Everyone loves this event because the waves are so fun. I don’t think I’m the only one that thought Taj was the standout of the event. At some point had to stop getting 9s and I just picked the right heat.”

Burrow went on an absolute rampage on the final day of competition to oust Brett Simpson in the Quarterfinals and Jordy Smith in the Semifinals, but fell just short of the score needed to surpass Slater for the victory in the back-half of their duel, finishing runner-up overall.

Jordy Smith surfed with style, punch and bite throughout the duration of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, securing exciting last-minute victories over Joel Parkinson and Alejo Muniz. However, the big South African was unable to overtake Burrow in a repeat of last season’s Final.

The next stop on the 2011 ASP World Title season will be the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach presented by Ford Ranger from April 19 – 30, 2011.

SNAPPER ROCKS, Queensland/Australia, 8 March 2011– Carissa Moore (HAW), 18, won the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover ,opening event of the 2011 ASP Women’s World Title season, in an electric final over Tyler Wright (AUS), 16.

Moore surfed with unparalleled speed, power and progression, and her victory can be taken as a fierce declaration of her plans for the year.

“All the girls are surfing amazing and we really saw it at this event,” Moore said. “It’s going to be an exciting year on tour. I just can’t wait to see what happens.”

Wright, who is into her first full year as an ASP Women’s World Title campaigner, blew people away with her performances throughout the Roxy Pro Gold Coast. Laura Enever, 2011 ASP Top 17 rookie, had a sensational run taking down a bevy of high-profile names before falling to Wright in the Semifinals. For her efforts, Enever finished Equal 3rd in her first event as an ASP Women’s World Title campaigner.

The world’s best surfers lit up the three-to-four foot (1.5 metre) swell on offer at Snapper Rocks as the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover completed Round 3 of competition.

Jordy Smith (ZAF), 23, 2010 ASP World Runner-Up, put in the performance of the day, posting a 17.17 out of a possible 20 for an unmatched affinity with the barrel, massive turns and aerials. The high-fi exhibition was enough to eliminate replacement surfer Cory Lopez (USA), 33.

Smith will face Brett Simpson (USA), 26, and Adriano de Souza (BRA), 24, when competition resumes.

Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 22, into his sophomore year amongst the ASP Top 34, put on an electric performance in Round 3.

Kelly Slater (USA), 39, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion, went out and put on a clinic of his own today, taking down wildcard Matt Banting (AUS), 16, with an incredible display of barrel-riding, progressive turns and aerials.

“I actually started getting a little distracted before my heat because Wilko (Matt Wilkinson) is one of my favorites to watch,” Slater said. “Sometimes he doesn’t make it, but he always pulls something big out of his bag. There are a couple of guys that are really exciting to watch here on their backhand.”

Slater will battle Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 22, and Michel Bourez (PYF), 25, when Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast competition recommences.

The Roxy Pro Gold Coast saw Tyler Wright (AUS), 16, continuing her sensational form at Snapper Rocks, posting the highest heat total of the round, a 16.67 out of a possible 20, and eliminating fellow rookie Pauline Ado (FRA), 20.

“That one wave that I got walled up pretty nice and it was a lot of fun,” Wright said. “A young guy named Jason Jameson makes my boards. He’s just a young guy, only 19, but they’re absolutely amazing, I couldn’t ask for anything more.” Wright will take on Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, when competition recommences.

The opening stop of the 2011 ASP Women’s World Title season, the Roxy Pro Gold Coast saw a return to form for reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, prevailed on wildcard Sarah Mason (NZL), 16, in Round 2, and Tyler Wright (AUS), 16, in Round 3.

Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, two-time ASP Women’s World Runner-Up (2008, 2009), secured the day’s highest heat total, a 15.27 out of a possible 20, during her Round 3 against Pauline Ado (FRA), 20, and Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 27. The progressive Brazilian surfed with unparalleled speed and aggression, advancing directly to the Quarterfinals.

Lima said she was confused about the waves, some were fat and it was difficult to choose the right ones. But she didn’t want to lose, good results are important to her, so she’s satisfied with the performance.
