Rip Curl has created a technologically advanced clip with multiscopy effects – multiscopy consists in a line of cameras firing consistently as surfers ride towards and past it- in order to create frozen moments of time that can be viewed in a combination of angles. In a few words, the surfers are frozen in the air as if time had stood still and you were moving around them. Pretty sick isn’t it? The technique is somewhat complicated and, as said above, a large number of cameras are needed. RipCurl and TimeSlice used 30 GoPro HD video cameras to gain this ‘Matrix style’ effect. The ASP has admitted that, due to a calculation error within its rankings’ system, the 2011 ASP World Title has yet to be officially decided and that Kelly Slater (USA), 39, was prematurely awarded his 11th ASP World Title on Wednesday.
“Our rankings’ system is designed to split tie-breaks based off of seed points,” Renato Hickel, ASP World Tour Manager, said. “Kelly (Slater) and Owen (Wright) tied at best nine of 11 results, so we went to best eight of 11 results and the system gave it to Kelly based off his higher seed position. We were operating under that assumption and created the ASP World Title scenarios based off of that. This was a mistake. In the end, we’re responsible for this and should be held accountable. We apologize to our fans, the surfers and to Owen and Kelly.”

Moving forward, Slater must win one more heat, while for Wright to remain in the hunt, he must win both the Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco and the following event at Pipeline in Hawaii.
REVISED 2011 ASP WORLD TITLE SCENARIOS:
– If Kelly wins either Round 4 or 5 (one more heat win) in San Francisco, he will confirm his 2011 ASP World Title.
– If Kelly fails to win another heat in San Francisco, Owen must win this event to send the 2011 ASP World Title race to Hawaii.
– If the race goes to Hawaii, Kelly must advance out of one heat to confirm his 2011 ASP World Title. If Kelly fails to advance through a heat at Pipeline, Owen must also win this event to stay in the 2011 ASP World Title Race.
– If Kelly fails to advance out of another heat this season, and Owen wins in San Francisco and Pipeline, the two will tie at best of nine, eight, seven, etc. events, and the 2011 ASP World Title will be decided in a “Surf Off”.

 Quarterfinalists have been determined yesterday at the Quiksilver Pro France, in picturesque conditions.

Burrow will take on Julian Wilson in Quarterfinal 4.

Kelly Slater continued his dismantling of the La Graviere peaks with unmatched speed and flow to claim his Round 4 victory and advance into the Quarterfinals.

The current ASP World No. 1 is hesitant when talking about his 2011 ASP World Title campaign.

“Quarterfinals is another good result for me and a lot of the guys that were threatening have fallen out early in this event,” Slater said. “I haven’t worked the numbers out, but they may be too far behind at this point. Owen (Wright) is obviously still in there and he’s really strong at the remaining events so I wouldn’t be surprised if it came down to the wire. There is still a lot that can happen.”

Jordy Smith, back in his first event since sustaining a rib injury in Tahiti, caused a major upset today, ousting current No. 2 Owen Wright from competition and shaking the 2011 ASP World Title race to its core.

La Graviere offered yesterday three-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) lefts and rights to open the competition at the Quiksilver Pro France.

Mick Fanning, defending Quiksilver Pro France winner, scored a sick 9.37 out of a possible 10 for an incredible forehand barrel and won his Round 1 heat.
Jordy Smith returned to competition today after a rib injury sustained during the Billabong Pro Tahiti, and although still suffering from soreness he made his way to a Round 1 victory.

Kelly Slater, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion, survived a difficult heat in a wave-starved Round 1.

“It was a nightmare out there,” Slater said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they called it out there. The tide is really high. It was a bummer and not very competitive. That’s the way France is sometimes though. Sometimes it’s on, sometimes it’s off.”

Also Owen Wright survived to Round 1 and he and Kelly will compete again in Round 3 of competition.

Joel Parkinson  suffered a shock elimination by Ramzi Boukhiam. Dane Reynolds, competing in his first ASP World Title event of the year, punctuated the afternoon’s action with a come-from-behind victory over Adriano de Souza.

Kelly Slater won his fifth Hurley Pro at Trestles, defeating Owen Wright  in a highly disputed final. Kelly Slater defeated the young Australian in a last-minute exchange with a final score of 17.50 to 16.74.

This was the third consecutive final for Slater and Wright and the two are the greatest rivals in the battle for the ASP World Title.

Slater was in great shape and recorded the highest heat-total of competition, 18.40 out of 20 in the Semifinals. He maitained his perfect form through the day performing some new-school airs and carves to obtain his unprecedented 48th elite ASP World Tour victory and third of the season.

During the opening day of the 2011 Hurley Pro at Trestles  the world’s best surfers showed high-performances in  two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at the pointbreak of Lower Trestles.

Julian Wilson earned both the day’s highest single-wave score of 8.93 (out of 10) and the event’s highest heat-total of 17.60 (out of 20).

Owen Wright, current No. 2 on the ASP World Title Rankings, took an impressive last wave with a series of air reverses and forehand wraps and won his heat over Patrick Gudauskas  and Conner Coffin.

Kelly Slater, reigning four-time Hurley Pro Trestles Champion and current leader on the ASP World Title Race,  won his Round 1 heat with last minute moves over Rob Machado and Fred Patacchia.

Owen Wright has claimed his maiden ASP Dream Tour victory winning the inaugural Quiksilver Pro New York over Kelly Slater and earning the historic US $300,000 first-place prize purse in offshore three-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) surf at Long Beach, New York.

“I’m just lapping it up right now,” Wright said. “I’ve always wanted to be in Final with Kelly (Slater) and last week at Teahupo’o was great. I think Kelly is ready for payback already. Thank you Long Beach, how good is this? Look at these waves! Thanks to Quiksilver, we’ve been looked after all week and they made it really easy for us and thanks for the $300,000. Thanks to my coach Dean Davies, it’s been up and down and we’ve worked towards a win and it means a lot. Thanks to my friends and family at home. I’ve been getting messages from them and my Dad, I wish he was here, but another day. Thanks heaps, I really appreciate the support.”

With this win Owen moves to No. 2 on the ASP World Title rankings and is now within striking distance of his first ASP World Title.

Slater was in great form on the final day of Quiksilver Pro New York, defeating  Josh Kerr  and Taj Burrow, but was unable to overtake Wright in the Final.

Kelly Slater  has claimed the Billabong Pro Tahiti presented by Air Tahiti Nui over Owen Wright  in clean four-to-six foot (1.5 – 2 metre) waves at Teahupo’o. The final day was a historic incarnation of the event, with the world’s best surfers pushing the performance envelope in incredible conditions.

Slater was on fire trough the whole day, beating an in-form Josh Kerr  in the Semifinals and then the lethal goofy-footer Wright in the Finals. The iconic American utilized his superior backhand tube-riding technique to post an 18.43 heat total out of a possible 20, which would prove too much for his younger opponent to overcome. This win marked Slater’s 47th elite tour victory (out of 67 Finals appearances).

Wright secured the best result of his young career today, finishing Runner-Up at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. The progressive Australian was a standout at Teahupo’o, notching perfect rides and impressive victories with ease.
