World-class athletes soared the skies in perfect flying conditions.

Zurich was on fire yesterday, with the world’s leading freestyle sports athletes in Snowboard, Freeski, FMX and MTB Dirt Jump combining their powers to make history! More than 32.000 spectators witnessed a never seen before simultaneous “Crossover Discipline Run”.

Freeskiers flying directly behind snowboarders down the Big Air and in for a landing as FMX riders catapulted over them against the backdrop of MTB riders – THE ultimate sports explosion! It doesn’t get better than that…

Snowboarder Chas Guldemond (USA) and freeskier Henrik Harlaut (SWE) bagged the title in their discipline. Danny Torres (ESP) proved once more that he is a living fmx legend, winning the title in the fourth! consecutive year.
It was the event’s premiere of the MTB Dirt Jump.

Thousands requests of Facebook fans convinced the event organisers to finally grand the mountainbikers the “flight permission on Zurich’s Landiwiese”. And their persistence paid off with Martin Soederstroem (SWE) securing the first ever freestyle.champ MTB Dirt Jump title in the event’s 18-year history!

An unforgettable urban skiing adventure to the Murmansk Oblast.

The guys from Flatlight Films and the Nipwitz Crew explored this far north-west part of Russia, finding such an amazing, decaying, urban environment, going from abandoned military headquarters to the grey suburbs of the cities and industrial areas.

Every place remind us of revolution, politic, war, the rise and decline of the Russian Empire…and riders decided to celebrate this with some insane tricks.

Winter X Games Europe are already over. The last two competitions were men’s and women’s ski superpipe. Among the men Torin Yater-Wallace dominated the scene and took home the gold medal. Runner up was Thoma Krief and third David Wise.

Roz Groenewoud won the women’s superpipe finals, followed by Devin Logan who took the silver and Anais Caradeux who took the bronze.

First day of Freestyle.CH was full of action. Enjoy the videos of the snowboard, skateboard, freeski and fmx qualifications and the crossover section.
In Snowboard Marko Grilc (SLO), Halldor Helgason (ICE), Christian Haller (SUI), Seppe Smits (BEL), Ståle Sandbech (NOR), Sebastien Toutant (CAN), Torgeir Bergrem (NOR) and Roope Tonteri (FIN) progressed through to the Semifinals.

In Freeski Jossi Wells (NZL), Tom Wallisch (USA), Elias Ambuehl (SUI), Kai Mahler (SUI), Andreas Hatveit (NOR), Gus Kentworthy (USA), Alex Schlopy (USA) and Markus Eder (ITA) progressed through to the Semifinals.

In the Skateboard Qualification Adam Taylor (USA), Pierre-Luc Gagnon (CAN), Elliot Sloan (USA), Paul-Luc Ronchetti, Jussi Korhonen (GBR), Jake Brown (AUS), Sando Dias (BRA) and Rony Gomes (BRA) precede, with Adam Taylor winning it.

In FMX Dany Torres (ESP), Maikel Melero (ESP), Tom Pages (FRA), Hannes Ackermann (GER), Petr Pialt (CZE) and Mat Rebeaud (SUI) progressed through to the Semifinals.

The final round of the Crossover Section saw Sebastien Toutant for the Snowboarders, Kai Mahler for the Freeskiers, Tom Pages for FMX and Vince Bryon for BMX. And the 2011 Champion is Vince Byron, who won with Triple Table Backflip & Flair

Under a bright sun took place the 4th edition of KUMI YAMA, the unique ski and snowboard event in the northerh emisphere. More than 200 riders joined the glacier of Les2Alpes with the aim of help Japan to recover from the recent disasters.

Some of the best riders from 15 different countries showed up, and among them also 10 of the best Japanese riders like the star Kazu Kokubo. They traveled more than 10 000 km to take part at the event. And if you’re wondering about what does Kumi Yama mean, it’s simple: gang of the mountains, in japanese of course.

The Kamikaze Contest was the highlight of the weekend. A slopestyle contest made of several structures (tables, hip, rails and bongs of every kind) that allowed the creation of countless lines.

Riders battled in group of 3 and their combos were judged depending on the use of the structures, the style and the harmony of their run.

Moreover, the contest was entirely dedicated to the Japanese culture, featuring a lot of video games such as taïko, gong, tori, sumo, Tetris, Pacman and so on.

It’s important to congrats the 2 finalist teams, that decided to run the final together, performing a series of tricks «Japan Airs», devolving their money prize to the WE RIDE FOR JAPAN association.

Kazu Kokubo’s team wasn’t on the podium, but it surely marked this edition with its great style!

Talking about freeski, a lot of great names were present such as the Italian Markus Eder and the Canadian JF Joule, Kevin Rolland (FR), Xavier Bertoni (FR), and Richard Permin.

Just like in the snow comp, 16 teams (10 pros/ 6 amateurs) battled one against the other, and creativity really made a difference here. The double cork Japan and double cork 1200 tail grab of JF Houle were cheered by the jury, and the team ended in third position. Lauri Kivari, with a 180 through Pacman, made his team to end up in second position. But it was the creativity of Markus Eder (1er) that surprised the judges the most and his team gained the first place.

The best trick competition of Sunday saw the snowboarder Thomas Delfino with a great method and the skier Jérémy Pancras with a double cork 1080 mute as the winners.

And a great surprise came from the kids too. Aspen Spora (9 years old, USA), Kelly Sildaru (9 years old, ESTONIE), Laurie Blouin (14 years old, CAN) and Francis Jobin (12 years old, CAN) had been anticipated as prodigies, since their videos on the web had a huge audience. And they showed all their impressive talent during the kids contest of Sunday.

She’s already spent on the skis 15 of her 18 years of life. Surely a lot of you already know her, and the others…well, are going to hear a lot about her, that’s sure! Charlotte “Charlie” Brangero!!!!

1.Hi Charlotte! Welcome on Candiesmagazine.com! Where do you come from, how old are you and how long have you been skiing?
Ciaoo! Thanks for the welcome! I live in Sauze D’Oulx in Val di Susa, I just turned 18 and I’m skiing since I was 3!

2.Sponsors and hook-ups?
By now it’s my family, out-of, and I cooperate with Movment. But for the next year I’m in touch with “Black Crows” of Bruno Compagnet to take part at the FWQ(freeride world qualification).

3. What was that pushed you to try your very first freestyle skis? Was it an idea that grew slowly in your head, or there’s something in particular that provoked it suddenly?
I did a lot of years of skiing and slaloms which made me almost hate the skis! Luckily there was my mother’s partner, Carlo Facelli, a passionate freerider and ski instructor, who used to take me with him freeriding and he even allowed me to spend a season with the freeskicamp!
And most of all, he made me love skiing again!

4. What are your favourite structures? And which park do you think was the best last year in Italy?
I love kickers! Unluckily here where I live the parks are not so good… The park of Prato Nevoso instead is nice, there aren’t huge kickers but they’re good, I think it can turn in something cool!
Surely the best Italian park is Livigno! I’d love having it near home!

5. What’s your favourite trick at the moment? And the one you’re trying to land?
I’d say switch5safty! Last winter I wanted to land cork5tail, I always land it on the airbag! But there was too little snow to try it.. So I hope I’ll land it this summer in Les 2 Alpes!!

6. What do you think about the contests in Italy? Do you like them, or you prefer riding with your friends?
They’re beginning to be good, but there aren’t enough women in the contests! There’s no competition! I like freestyle contests, but they stress me too much, so I prefer riding and chilling in the park.
Instead, I love freeride contests and I take part to a lot of them. Carlo and I are cooperating with I-FREE to organize a freeride contest here in Sauze, and it’ll be called the Free Respect!

7. What are your projects for the future? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In a year I’ll be ski instructor, but first of all I wanna ride and freeride a lot! I’d like so much traveling to ride a lot of mountains in the world and to progress more and more. And I’d like to involve more and more people teaching them freeski!

8. There aren’t many girls in Italy that go big freeskiing. In your opinion, who’s particularly good at the moment?
Surely Ary!! (read the exclusive itw here) She rocks! She’s powerful and stylish, and she’s different from all the other girls that are often scared.. she’s not intimidated by the kickers size!

9. The best moment vs the worst moment?
A very cool moment – and terrible at the same time – was last winter, when I broke my nose landing from a too big cliff… at first I started to cry and there was plenty of blood, then I started to laugh until I reached the bar. But when I saw myself in the mirror I started to cry again saying “I don’t wanna have a crooked nose for all my life!!!”
Anyway, the best moments are when I’m with a pumped and skilled bunch of friends, so I have fun and I learn at the same time!
Instead, the worst moments were when I had to slalom while all the others where shredding! But it was useful in the end, because it helped me to pass the exam for the istructors selection.

10. What kind of feelings skis can give you? Could you live an altenative life without them?
They make me feel well, free and most of all I have fun! Skiing has always helped me even in the worst moments. Without them I’d feel empty and without goals to reach!

11. Have you ever tried any other freestyle sport? Snowboarding, or maybe skating, surfing?
When I was 13-14 I started to ride motocross with my dad, who was a champion in the past and an amateur now. But it didn’t last a lot. I also break danced until I was 15.
When I was sick of skiing I tried to ride snowbobs, but I didn’t get involved! I like skating, but it hurts too much, so I prefer riding a longboard when I’m in Les 2 Alpes!

12. How do you prepare yourself for an important riding day? Do you have any particular ritual, or you simply go partying?
I like parties, but I think there are periods to party and periods to ski! You must balance the two things, of course you mustn’t loose to much time with the parties! Before an important riding day I go to bed early and I take a good coffee with something else in the morning;)!

Maybe someone of you remember when in the 90’s there was such a rivalry between freestyle skiers and snowboarders. Something very similar to the neverending “skateboards vs rollerblades” battle.

What a funny time. Now in the 21^st century luckily this is definitively over and both kind of riders go diggin’ jumps in backcountry and rode the park together. More friends, more fun, isn’t it?

What a best way to celebrate the brotherhood than with a nice video ? “Come find us” is one of the kind that definitely leaves you mouth wide open. Fully filmed by Toy Soldier Production from icy Montana, it features a sick bunch of skiers and snowboarders goin’ nasty in some radical street spots.

Riding level is something sick – don’t ask me to name all the tricks featured here, but a couple of fronnie are definitively MONSTER. Quality of the filming is next level.
