Following the success of the inaugural Red Bull Skate Generation in 2010, the international invitational event returned to Florianopolis in Brazil this year for a second demonstration of cross-generation skating skills held in local hero Pedro Barros’s very own private skatepark (Florianopolis). In front of 2000 fans, Barros used his home advantage to good effect as he grabbed victory to cement his reputation as the king of the bowl.

Just as two years ago, Pedro Barros’s tree-lined backyard provided an incredible backdrop for a truly unique contest putting teams of skaters aged 15 to 50 against each other. With teams featuring one member from each of the categories Pro, Pro Master, Legend and Amateur, Saturday’s qualifying session gave the riders a chance to get used to the course and, at the same time, determined the line-ups for the grand finale on Sunday.

After a tough battle between the five teams, it came down to a straight shoot-out between the crew led by six-time vert world champion, Sandro Dias, and the posse headed by local favourite Barros. With teammates Christian Hosoi (Legend), Leo Kakinho (Pro Master) and Felipe Caltabiano (Amateur) all rocking the bowl and feeding off the energy of the partisan 2000-strong crowd, Barros pushed on to lead his riders to victory with towering aerials, sick tricks and unrivalled speed. Second place went to the team of Dias (Pro), Jeff Grosso (Legend), Paul Roger (Pro Master) and Franco (Amateur).

“In the world scene there is a true competitive balance on the half-pipe, but that is not the case in the bowl – Pedro is simply the king,” admitted Hosoi, who was on the receiving end of a big bear-hug from a tearful Barros as the duo clambered onto the podium. “It is a dream come true for me to see these guys who I have admired ever since I was a little boy come over to ride at my house,” said two-times X-Games medallist Barros after the event. “This is what skateboarding is all about – the energy, camaraderie and friendship, all combined with a competition format.”

Vert Attack 6 was a huge event! The riding level was extremely high, a lot of great skaters came from around the world and among them there were even legends as Duane Peters and Mike Vallely. The vert is a bit smaller than the usual ramps so there were also skaters that usually rip bowls. And they literally rocked the place!

Already from the JUNIOR competition you could feel that it was going to be an event completely filled with awesome skate! The 18 JUNIOR rocked as pros. Yuto Horigome was on fire! a lot of big tricks as 540s and so on.. And the best was yet to come!

The session with 27 MASTER was really good. It was sick to see Duane and Mike skating live. Duane, despite some injuries which afflicted his skills, pulled out a series of impressive tricks and I liked his attitude to go really big! His R’n'R are inimitable and his style is fucking punk rocker.

Mike skated sick. The way he goes for a trick is impressive. So much power in it, straight to the point. He did a no comply tailslide over the gap which made the whole audience explode. It was a really great emotion to meet those legends!
I appreciated how Justin Lynch, Jeff Hedges Macki Vertboy and Bruno Rouland skated. All the first 6 placed made a huge final session!

The PRO were more, 45. More different styles, from pure vert riders to bowl ones and everything in between. Ben Hatchell put the place on fire and won with an impressive series of bowl tricks like McTwist, grinds on the cooping, inverts and so on. His style was one of the coolest, really calm and secure but sick at the same time! His final run was extremely good.

Brad McClain, the fifth classified, skated similarly and almost at the same level. The other 4 in the final rocked more in the sky pulling out different tricks in the air. I think that for the judges was really difficult because all 6 of them deserved to win. Another difference was that the first 2 skaters skated without pads! Mike Crum skated extremely well. Gen Ogawa from Japan was gnarly, many different tricks, just like a skater encyclopedia!

Tim Bijsterveld from the Netherlands (from the Area51 skatepark) did the sickest thing of the contest by dropping in from a ramp of stairs into the vert ramp. It is easy to see it yourself, check out on youtube and the picture here

This guy has balls! In my opinion he deserved the prize for the sickest trick.

Malmo is a great place for skaters, in the summer there is an open air contest called ultra bowl and I recommend everybody to check it out! The organization was so good that nothing went wrong. John Magnusson, a really good skateboarder from Sweden, leaded the organization and it was a real success! The speaker was Stan Postmus from the Netherlands.
Dobermani will surely come there back!
