La Costa Rica è conosciuta per le sue spiagge, il mare ed il surf, ma forse meno conosciuta per lo skateboard. Il nostro amico Yorhany Zúñiga ha deciso così di raccontarci qualcosa, attraverso questo video che sta girando in rete da qualche giorno. Le sue parole sono significative, ed effettivamente fanno riflettere sul concetto di “soddisfazione” a cui siamo abituati al giorno d’oggi, dove forse, una giornata è storta solo perchè non riusciamo ad accedere al nostro profilo di facebook. “I ragazzi di Nosara stanno dimostrando a tutti che quando si ha passione per qualche cosa si ha tutto.
Nosara e’ un paesino della Costa Rica, vicino alla costa, nel quale fino ad ora si praticava un solo sport: il surf.
Ma ultimamente lo skatebording ha preso campo e, nonostante le difficoltà per poter praticare questo sport, i ragazzi hanno costruito un “mini pipe”.
Loro sono molto felici di avere scoperto questo nuovo sport, molto simile al surf!

I ragazzi di Nosara stanno dimostrando che basta poco per poter praticare lo skate, senza dover avere grandissime strutture.
Sono molto fieri di avere scoperto questo sport e si aspettano che al più presto venga costruito in zona uno skatepark.
Intanto i ragazzi di Nosara salutano tutti gli altri skaters che vivono in città, i quali sono convinti di non avere luoghi abbastanza attrezzati dove poter sk8tare, invitando loro a riflettere su quanto in effetti hanno.”

I’m pretty sure you already checked the report (here) that our friend Nicola from Dobermani Production did at the Volcom Bergfest 2012 in Munster, isn’t it?

But here we have a different view from a young girl that was shooting at the event – and guys, it was the first time for her shooting a skate competition! She did an amazing job! – and she’d been so kind to share with us this amazing experience. We have to say, we like so much when people work hard to follow their dreams and doing the things they love. “I grabbed my camera (EOS 60D) with my two objectives (50 mm 1:1.8 II and 18-135 mm 3.5-5.6 IS) and hopped on my car. It was still quite early in the morning, regarding the fact that I had a day off and could sleep till early noon if I wanted to. But today was going to be an amazing day and leaving early felt pretty good actually.

Normally I carry my camera with me a lot and almost everywhere, but this was a premiere for me. Today was the day of the VOLCOM Bergfest 2012 in Münster, Germany. I was ready for some of the finest skateboarding in the legendary Berg Fidel bowl. No idea how I managed to not shoot any skateboarding or snowboarding before, maybe due to a lack of camera or just the fact that I normally prefer to be the one on the board instead of standing next to it. This is also the reason why I was excited for weeks before the actual contest. I was prepared, battery charged, empty memory card, ready to capture some impressive skateboarding moments on camera.

The moment I arrived at the event was kind of relaxed, not many people were around yet. The Pros were practicing and the actual contest would start in about two hours. A friend of mine wanted to join me later on and till then I took the chance to scan the whole place. This was a great opportunity to find the best shooting places, the rider’s preferred runways and the trick hot spots.

I was really impressed by the huge bowl and was shooting every drop in, jump, bail and trick I could capture to make sure not to miss anything and to adjust the settings of the camera at first. I think that getting close to the riders allowed me to capture the great dynamics of the moment, but at the beginning I found myself taking photographs of riders jumping out of my pictures because I was too slow to follow them or they were coming closer than expected and than I could move backwards (because of people standing behind me) to set the focus right. This was indeed frustrating sometimes but all beginning is difficult, and I still had the rest of the day to shoot and practice. I couldn’t wait for the contest to begin.
The crowd had grown a lot since I arrived at the event, consisting of all different age groups from toddlers with their parents to older ones. It was great to see that this sport is able to fascinate and connect all age groups and that everyone is welcome. This pretty down to earth impression was supported by the fact that the people had the chance to be very close to the bowl and the riders. Feeling as if you’re in the middle of it – this is what I call a great event!

The contest started and the excitement reached its climax; the Kids, Amateurs, Masters and Pros impressed the crowd with their skills, showing some great style, incredible speed-lines and crazy tricks.

I was really happy to be there and to soak up the whole atmosphere. Hence, I decided to not only capture some tricks but also the little details that normally might stay unnoticed, such as damaged shoes, concentrated riders, happy kids.

My conclusion:
Shooting skateboarding photographs is one of the coolest things I have ever done, not only that I saw some incredible skateboarding, I also met some really great people there and can’t wait for the next chance to go shooting.

If you’re at a contest, try not to get too mad if a professional photographer decides to stand right in front of you. This just means you picked the perfect place for a photograph, which actually is a very good thing showing you have the right sense for it. Further, it’s definitely nothing you can’t talk about. And one thing is for sure, I will be there next year too and if you want to experience this amazing event and atmosphere as well, just visit Münster in 2013 and maybe I’ll see you there!

Last Sunday I had a daytrip to Turin to shot the Torino Street Challenge – I supposed you already checked out the crazy 365 bmx contest full report, isn’t it ?!

I’ve obviously been to Turin many times, but I never “explored” the city. This time I had some free time before the contest and I just started wandering around.

What I found in my opinion is an incredible city – totally different from the place I live even if it’s just 150 km far! – The buildings are majestic, huge spaces and endless squares ( in the one where the Street Challenge was held we have a bmx park, a free climbing area, a flying disc field, mtb tracks, and even more!)

…no to be mentioned my uneasiness being almost the only one not riding a fixed bike, but just walkin

I also found strange, unknown sign painted on the street…I never saw them in Genoa

After about an hour of walking, and spotting a couple of mindblowing book stores, I headed towards the Skate Plaza Valdo Fusi, where the “Cash For Tricks” event was attended.

Was pretty funny to walk the streets with the reflex on, I feel like an American tourist being in Italy for the first time, but, well, I can’t resist to take some shoots here and there

What can I say then about the skateplaza? I don’t know very well its history, I started hearing rumors about it in early 2010 but just by reading on the web, some people told me the project took years to be approved and then executed. However I can say the result is amazing. It’s a place where you can skate almost on everything…

…but still people can walk by or just chill.

There are many structures there, banks, hips, benches, rails, nothing too huge, I think the purpose was to make the spot skateable to anyone.

Too bad that day I took just some random shots, being that the real “Cash for Tricks” event was in concomitance of the bmx contest I had to attend. Anyway, I guess you got the point – what a sick location! -

The city of Turin goes in the street again for the third, terrific, episode of the “Torino Street Style” – a mixture of different freestyle sports such as flying disc, bike polo, fixed bikes, mtb, free-climbing, street acrobats, and of course BMX and skateboarding (I had the chance to shoot a bit also in the wonderful Skate Plaza Valdo Fusi, what an incredible place! A sport report will be published in next days).

Travelling 3 hrs by train (Italian trains, if you know what I mean) in a hot a sunny Sunday could have been discouraging but to be honest I was hyped foreseeing the event!

Main location for the event was the beautiful Piazza Castello in the city center, where the 365bmx crew built an amazing park featuring two quarterpipes, a pyramid box, a funbox, and a wallride!

Riders compete for the final on Saturday, and after elimination rounds, only fifteen of them gained a place for Sunday finals. We had there the most talentuos Italian bmx riders: Simone Barraco, Stefan Lantschner,Davide Altobelli,Alessandro Froio,Emanuel Bettassa,Dario Loconte,Mirko Andreani,Stefano Giusiano,Stefano Nicastro,Leonardo Longato,Jan Balugani,Mattia Rocchi,Ludovico Watson,Edoardo Botti, Federico Tralongo (in qualification order).

Competition format was 20 min run and then 10 minutes for the “best trick” for each battery. Riders were already hot (well, maybe also cause the temperature was near 30°C ), but in my opinion they were more focused to perform a good riding than to “win the competition”, and that’s an amazing, less stressing, feeling!

I’ve been impressed by the variation of tricks, each rider rided the park in his own way drawing new lines in each run. I’ve been stoked especially by Mirko Andreani’s 360 out of bound off the kicker, landing in the street…

…Stefan Lantschner’s HUGE kicker to kicker transfer, gapping the quarter…

…Davide “Dadda” Altobelli’s sick 540 over the box, he won the best trick competition with this one…

…and almost any trics by Simone Barraco

An unforgettable urban skiing adventure to the Murmansk Oblast.

The guys from Flatlight Films and the Nipwitz Crew explored this far north-west part of Russia, finding such an amazing, decaying, urban environment, going from abandoned military headquarters to the grey suburbs of the cities and industrial areas.

Every place remind us of revolution, politic, war, the rise and decline of the Russian Empire…and riders decided to celebrate this with some insane tricks.

This second episode features the first day in Berlin, as well as the first day in the first skate park. The skate park Ringstrasse is easy but stylish. Unluckily they were surprised by a storm and had to run away. There are a lot of tricks anyway, and some cruising in the city with skates on. Enjoy, and stay tuned for the next episode!
 
The guys of Seven Stars went to a crazy skate trip to Berlin, and decided to create a sort of documentary video journal in 12 episodes to share with all us their adventure. The project is not only about tricks, it’s a real documentary with sk8park routes, photos of the city and happy movie scenes.
