Austria’s Felix Baumgartner earned his place in the history books on Sunday after overcoming concerns with the power for his visor heater that impaired his vision and nearly jeopardized the mission. Baumgartner reached an estimated speed of 1,342.8 km/h (Mach 1.24) jumping from the stratosphere, which when certified will make him the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall and set several other records while delivering valuable data for future space exploration.

After flying to an altitude of 39,045 meters (128,100 feet) in a helium-filled balloon, Felix Baumgartner completed Sunday morning a record breaking jump for the ages from the edge of space, exactly 65 years after Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier flying in an experimental rocket-powered airplane. The 43-year-old Austrian skydiving expert also broke two other world records (highest freefall, highest manned balloon flight), leaving the one for the longest freefall to project mentor Col. Joe Kittinger.

Baumgartner landed safely with his parachute in the desert of New Mexico after jumping out of his space capsule at 39,045 meters and plunging back towards earth, hitting a maximum of speed of 1,342.8 km/h through the near vacuum of the stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere later during his 4:20 minute long freefall. Countless millions of people around the world watched his ascent and jump live on television broadcasts and live stream on the Internet. At one point during his freefall Baumgartner appeared to spin rapidly, but he quickly re-gained control and moments later opened his parachute as members of the ground crew cheered and viewers around the world heaved a sigh of relief.

“It was an incredible up and down today, just like it’s been with the whole project,” a relieved Baumgartner said. “First we got off with a beautiful launch and then we had a bit of drama with a power supply issue to my visor. The exit was perfect but then I started spinning slowly. I thought I’d just spin a few times and that would be that, but then I started to speed up. It was really brutal at times. I thought for a few seconds that I’d lose consciousness. I didn’t feel a sonic boom because I was so busy just trying to stabilize myself. We’ll have to wait and see if we really broke the sound barrier. It was really a lot harder than I thought it was going to be.”

Baumgartner and his team spent five years training and preparing for the mission that is designed to improve our scientific understanding of how the body copes with the extreme conditions at the edge of space.

Baumgartner had endured several weather-related delays before finally lifting off under bright blue skies and calm winds on Sunday morning. The Red Bull Stratos crew watching from Mission Control broke out into spontaneous applause when the balloon lifted off.

Double flips, world-class riders & an awesome atmosphere What a session! On September 29th, 2012 an absolute contest highlight went down at the watersports trade show INTERBOOT/Germany with the event „CA$H FOR TRICKS“. One of the initiators, Nico von Lerchenfeld, invited twenty of the world‘s best wakeboarders to battle together for 3,333€ prize money. Riders like Shane Bonifay, Bob Soven and Jeremia Hoppe made the crowd go crazy with their progressive tricks.

For the Invitational-Contest „CA$H FOR TRICKS“ Sesitec and Unit Parktech put a setup consisting of the System 2.0, a spine kicker as well as a Pat Panakos Signature rail.
On Friday, Septemer 28th, about 30 amateurs and rookies were allowed to show their skills on the unique setup in a Stuff for Tricks session. The kids could get Electric Visual & more sponsored goodies for good trys or nice tricks.

Saturday was all about the pros. Twenty wakeboarders from nine countries were invited by Nico von Lerchenfeld (GER) to battle for one of the coveted glass cylinders for the CA$H. Spectators arrived from all over Germany to cheer for the riders. The chilled contest format allowed the riders to come up with an unbelievably high level of tricks.

In the end it was Antoine Allaux (FRA), Hugo Charbit (FRA), Louis Mistaudy (FRA) and surprisingly PeterPascal „P2“ Schmidt (GER) who could fill up their cylinders with lots of CA$H. The judges recommended the amount to the MC Clint Liddy, who then asked the crowd how much they want to give to the riders. The bigger the applause, the more money the riders got. Steffen Vollert (GER) and Nico von Lerchenfeld qualified for finals as well and showed some rail highlights with a Backside Boardslide 360 Transfer from double-kinked to downrail or Toeside Backside 360 Tailpress to Frontside 360 out on the double-kinked.

Top 3 CA$H Makers – Tobias Michel, Mattias & Jeremia Hoppe Young gun Tobias Michel (GER) was the surprise of the day. The kid from the Allgäu, close to Friedrichshafen, convinced with plenty of style on all features and thus saved the third most CA$H with 445 Euros. Previous year‘s winner Mattias Hoppe (SWE) got 510 Euros just close behind his younger brother Jeremia (535 Euros). There can be no other way than winning the event with the first ever Double Frontflip Nosegrab to Revert!

Both of the Swedes are machines on kickers and proved once again in the following Best-Trick-Session. Mattias won it with a Toeside Frontside 1080.
Conclusion – riders as well as spectators happy CA$H FOR TRICKS established to an absolute top-event in its third edition. From riders for riders – pushed by the innovative format and the relaxed atmosphere amongst the riders they could show some unbelievable tricks. Infected by the hype of all the riders the spectators stayed despite partially heavy rain and made the event to something very special. Or to say it like some of the riders: „The highlight of the year“.

DC and Ken Block present Gymkhana FIVE: Ultimate Urban Playground; San Francisco.

Shot on the actual streets of San Francisco, California, GYM5 features a focus on fast, raw and precise driving action. Filmed over four days, director Ben Conrad and his team are back to work on their second Gymkhana production and delivered the entire city of San Francisco as Ken Block’s personal gymkhana playground. DC Shoes also provided fellow DC athlete and longtime Ken Block friend, Travis Pastrana, to make a cameo appearance on his dirtbike, and S.F. resident Jake Phelps of Thrasher Magazine fame also makes a cameo as Block hoons S.F. in his most incredible Gymkhana yet.

Here we are with the last day of Summer X Games in Los Angeles. One of the highlights was surely the Men’s Skateboard Street competition finals, where Paul Rodriguez dominated the scene followed by Ryan Sheckler and Nyjah Huston

Bmx big air finals were pretty exciting with Steve McCann flying like there was no tomorrow with his no-handed double front-flip. Seecond place went to Zack Warden and the bronze to Kevin Robinson.

The Rally Cross saw Sebastien Loeb on top of the podium followed by Ken Block and Brian Deegan

Last but not least, the Moto X Enduro men saw the victory of Mike Brown, Cody Webb and Cory Graffunder while among the women the winners are Maria Forsberg, Louise Forsley and Chantelle Bykerk.

First day of X Games 18 in Los Angeles went out confirming this huge event as a perfect ground for freestyle sport’s record breaks. No matter they’re riding a skateboard, a bmx or even driving a car, you can be sure you’ll see something never done before!

The main, Medal Event, for the 28 of July was the FMX Finals, seeing the hottest ever Taka Higashino takin’ gold with a score of 93.33 (I saw video of him training, I was doubtless he would have gone big in competition) and unleashing on the first run the first ever landed backflip rock solid double grab, not to mention this crazy air popped during the contest..kiss of death flip, superman no hander, heel-clicker flip, just to name a few of them. On Skateboarding Big Air Qualification, best run was for Rony Gomes, but the show was made by 15yrs old Mitchie Brusco and his first 900 ever landed in X Games history. Obviuosly if you ever heard of Tom Schaar you won’t be surprised he landed consequently two 900 in the successive runs. Well, still not enough to beat the score of the young Alex Sorgente that got 7th place
However a shotout to the kids is needed, considering that four of the finalist are under 16, including the 11 years old Jagger Eaton (younger rider of X Games) that opened the comp with a crazy backflip over channel!
The 11 qualifiers will battle for a chance for the gold against actual medal holder Bob Burnquist in tonite finals, stay tuned cause there will be a crazy show!
