Ho scoperto Lo Sceriffo Lobo totalmente per caso mentre aspettavo salisse sul palco Chris Cohen.
Forse il mix di riff punkeggianti e refrain midi così anni ’80, forse le lyrics totalmente sconclusionate ma accattivanti, fatto sta che il giorno dopo i suoi pezzi erano in loop nel mio mp3, ed ho così anche deciso di scoprire chi fosse davvero questo Sceriffo Lobo.

Iniziamo con una facile provocazione: “non sei un po’ troppo vecchio per essere lo sceriffo lobo?”
Da bambino mi piazzavano davanti alla gente a suonare il pianoforte, vestito elegante come un vecchio, ed ero molto, molto inquieto. Ora sono decisamente più a mio agio: quello che faccio unisce alcune mie malinconie adolescenziali al campionario di ascolti e strimpellate che ho accumulato negli anni. Cerco di evitare gli elementi più conservatori del punk rock, dell’electro-pop, del demenziale per trovare una sintesi che mi diverta. In definitiva, non sono troppo vecchio per essere lo sceriffo lobo perché io, per certi versi, sono ancora un ragazzetto e lo sceriffo lobo, in realtà, è più vecchio di quanto non sembri a prima vista. Ci incontriamo nel mezzo.

Il tuo nick rende un po’ difficoltosa la ricerca su Google. Come mai hai scelto proprio questo personaggio?
Fu la prima cosa che mi venne in mente, una citazione da una puntata dei Simpson in cui Homer si lamentava per l’interruzione della serie “lo sceriffo lobo” (che ho campionato nella prima traccia del mio ultimo disco). Ogni riferimento alla serie televisiva “lo sceriffo lobo” (che non conosco) o al fumetto “lobo” (che è una figata) è puramente casuale.

Un po’ chiunque da ragazzino si è divertito a comporre improbabili tracce in loop sull’immancabile 386. In effetti la tua musica ha un chè di nostalgico. Il tuo esordio è stato in qualche modo simile? Oppure frutto di un approccio più ragionato?
Ho fatto il primo dischetto nel 2006, pubblicato solo ed esclusivamente per il giro dei miei amici, ed in effetti l’approccio è stato proprio quello: voler giocare con i programmi musicali come se stessi giocando con un videogame, con il solo upgrade di cantarci sopra quei motivetti che mi frullavano per la testa durante le normali attività quotidiane. Successivamente ho avuto un approccio più ragionato anche perché a me piace studiarmi un pochino le cose e la fase compositiva è indubbiamente quella che preferisco.

Le tue sonorità ricalcano quelle dei vecchi videogames 8-bit, iniziando dal campionamento del suono delle monete di Super Mario. Qual è stato il videogioco che ti ha più influenzato dal punto di vista musicale?
La prima console che ho avuto è stato il nintendo 8 bit, i cui giochi hanno sempre avuto colonne sonore pazzesche, basate su poche idee, chiare, semplici, ripetute. Penso a Zelda, o a Super Mario e a tutte le variazioni dei suoi temi, o a giochi più di nicchia come Time Lord o Kid Icarus . Nonostante ciò, devo ammettere che oggi seguo pochissimi musicisti 8 bit al 100% (uno è mat64): molti di loro secondo me cadono nel tranello di pensare di fare roba figa solo perché hanno i suonini dei videogiochi senza magari porre molta attenzione all’equilibrio e alla melodia/armonia del pezzo. Io cerco di utilizzare i suoni 8bit come se fossero un altro strumento, oltre alla chitarra e alla voce.

Ed invece il videogioco preferito tra quelli attuali?
In questo periodo sto giocando a Metroid Fusion per Game Boy Advance: un gioco che mischia platform a scorrimento laterale, sparatutto, un po’ di ricerca e sviluppo del personaggio. Veramente bellissimo. In genere gioco molto più con le console portatili (nintendo ds/gb advance) perché sto poco a casa e non riesco ad avere la continuità per seguire avventure più complesse da console casalinga. Ho una riga di giochi davvero belli del 360 lasciati tristemente a metà e che non riesco a riprendere perché non mi ricordo più dove ero arrivato e come.

Cosa utilizzi per comporre la tua musica, sia dal punto di vista strumentale che software? Fai sempre tutto da solo o ti avvali anche di altri musicisti?
Per comporre le parti elettroniche utilizzo un pc con Fruity Loops e Audition. Poi uso una chitarra elettrica, qualche pedalino, un microfono e un mixer. In linea di massima registro tutto in camera; qualche volta ho coinvolto altre persone ma più per farsi due risate che per esigenze musicali. Dal vivo, per le parti elettroniche uso una groovebox (roland mc505) e il microkorg ai quali si aggiungono chitarra, ampli, pedalini ed accessori … in pratica mi porto dietro strumenti per due o tre persone e mi maledico con tutta l’anima ogni volta che devo caricare/scaricare da solo.

Mi immagino camera tua ridondante di vecchie consolle e edizioni storiche di The Games Machine. Ma in realtà cosa c’è nella tua “cameretta”?
Riapri una ferita dolorosa: non molto tempo fa ho preso consapevolezza che tutte le mie riviste del nintendo club anni ‘90 sono andate perdute, compresa la spilletta di Super Mario e le varie lettere che mi mandava il club. Un vero delitto. Mia madre dovrà rendere conto.
A parte questo triste aneddoto, in effetti in questo momento ho un super nintendo ed un sega megadrive montati alla tv (a tubo catodico, perché le console vecchie danno qualche problema con le tv di nuova generazione). Vicino c’è anche l’xbox 360 (staccato per i motivi di cui sopra). Il mio wii ce l’ha la mia ragazza a casa sua. Poi ho tutti i miei strumenti musicali, un’insegna luminosa lunga un metro con scritto “rock n roll”, cassetti con dvd, videogiochi, cd, vinili, libri, fumetti, un poster gigante con due lontre. Insomma, lo stretto necessario per condurre una vita sana.

I tuoi cd sono interamente autoprodotti, anche in senso fisico, giusto? Sei un autentico paladino della musica indie e del DIY. E’ possibile quindi fare ancora tutto da solo? Tu come ci riesci?
Per essere precisi, più che “fai da te” si dovrebbe parlare di “facciamo da noi”. Io sono parte attiva dell’associazione Disorderdrama (www.disorderdrama.org) che, oltre ad organizzare concerti fighissimi a Genova da molti anni (ad esempio, quello di Chris Cohen di cui si parlava prima), è impegnata anche in altre attività non strettamente musicali che producono contenuti che ci piacciono e che sono fuori da certe logiche di mercato che generalmente hanno effetti negativi sul risultato finale. Il mio ultimo disco è stato registrato da me, mixato da me e Matteo Casari (il boss di marsiglia records e gran visir di Disorderdrama), stampato e confezionato da me ed alcuni compari dell’associazione. In sostanza, io ho seguito ogni fase della produzione con l’ausilio di amici che mi hanno aiutato ad ottenere un migliore risultato finale condividendo con me impegno, birrette, frizzi e lazzi. Inoltre sono stato supportato in diverse fasi da due etichette indipendenti: Marsiglia Records e Under My Bed Recordings.

Hai davvero una tua newsletter?
Quando ancora i social network non erano molto sviluppati, avevo creato una mailing list per dare news a quei pochi che si interessavano alle mie cose. Così avevo composto al volo 30 secondi di canzone (che aveva giusto un synth arpeggiato e la voce) per invitare la gente ad iscriversi. Poi, a forza di suonarlo dal vivo, il pezzo si è un sviluppato e così ho pensato di farne una nuova versione nel disco nuovo. Nel frattempo però avevo perso la password della mailing list… I tempi però sono maturi per riportare in auge quel mitologico strumento di divulgazione: mi attiverò al più presto (che, in ambito underground, potrebbe voler dire un minuto o 10 anni).

Il tuo ultimo album “Il Veicolo Interiore” (mi piace tantissimo anche il dinosauro) è uscito da qualche mese; hai in progetto già qualcos’altro? O pensi di rilassarti suonando un po’ in giro?
Mi piacerebbe provare a suonare un po’ più spesso fuori da Genova. Suonare nella tua città è più facile perché si possono dare per scontate certe cose, in quanto molti di quelli che hai davanti ti conoscono già e sanno cosa aspettarsi. Quelli che rimangono un po’ interdetti vedono altra gente che sorride ed entrano più rapidamente in sintonia. Fuori casa bisogna essere un po’ più precisi ed espliciti per far capire alla gente la bontà delle tue intenzioni in quel poco tempo che hai a disposizione. In questo periodo sto cercando di prendere le misure sul live set. Parallelamente, continuo comunque a raccogliere idee nuove, me le segno/registro, faccio bozze di basi: come dicevo prima, questa è la fase che preferisco.

Cosa fa Lo Sceriffo Lobo quando non è Lo Sceriffo Lobo?
Lavoro in ufficio con numeri, scadenze, clienti, caffè, piante, lunedì-mattina e tutte queste cose qui. Per non dimenticarmi cifre e date, appiccico post-it da tutte le parti. Me li pinzo sui vestiti, sullo zaino. Sto sviluppando una mente da burocrate che spaventa me stesso e quelli che mi stanno intorno. A me in realtà non fa schifo. A volte forse si. Però tutto questo mi dà la possibilità di comprare le poche cose che mi servono per essere contento e mi lascia un po’ di tempo per fare le cose che mi piacciono davvero con le migliori persone in circolazione!

Dopo due anni di silenzio in cui comunque continua a produrre e a collaborare con Cosimo Martinez esce l’Ep” Drama rap” un mini album composto da 6 traccie, lo stesso anno collabora con il Morto che parla nel mixtape ” Esse Esse War vol. 1″.Attualmente è impegnato nella realizzazione di un nuovo album Nothing but Trouble e ha collaborato in due traccie del mixtape “Esse Esse War vol. 2″. Everything is ready for the Maccagno Beach, the greatest event on the East Coast of lake Maggiore: 4 bands, a dj set and the best skaters of the scene are the ingredients of this 5° edition on Saturday July 28 in Maccagno (Va).

The event starts at 2pm with some punk hardcore bands which literally rock: ‘Duckpond’, ‘If I Die Today’ and ‘Detroit’ will play during the amateur skate-contest and the Best Trick contest which have a Prize Money of 500€ and other cool prizes.

From 8h30 pm after-party with the indie band ‘Chaos Surfari’ and the dj set ‘Idee Partycolari’.

Seven Stars has a new shining star in the team. Read her story and listen to her tracks. They’re worth it!

ElfA was born in 1983 in Turin. She gets in touch with the hiphop culture in 1999 and she falls in love both with its lifestyle and mciing as form of expression.

In 2001 she’s only 17 and she already releases her first demo song. In 2002 ElfA, RedKarma, cK and Lylis create the Free Belch Krew. They release 3 songs and take part to the DaBomb 2002 contest( Rome ) placing second.

Then she goes on with her solo career and cooperates with various artists of the reggae scene. Her songs are hiphop but enriched by reggae tunes.

In 2006 she takes part to the K9 and dj Dust’s compilation “Tra Bianco e Nero” with her track “All’esterno della Sfera”.

She’s been guest at the radio and performed several times on stage in Bologna. In 2007 she organizes with Ledy Rò, Cherry, Cugi and Lil’Flame the Fly Over Da Beat, a jam session with fly and b-girls from all over Italy.

In 2010 she releases the song “Ti dissolvi”.

In 2011 she takes part to the mixtape Torino Bass Culture with the song “Follow Me Down”.

And she keeps on performing live on many stages in Italy. In 2001 SEVEN STARS CLOTHING becomes her official sponsor!

You all certainly agree that music means a lot to all of us. You listen it while chilling, when you have fun or maybe it’s even a background for the daily routine. In our opinion, it’s even more: it’s inspiration and motivation. And today we’re stoked to have a talk with one of the motivating bands out there, the “Hatebreed”.

On the scene since 1993, Hatebreed has traced a path of coherence and aggressive sound since the very beginning, creating a very own attitude reaching a worldwide success which is second to none. The thing we like the most about them it’s their positive approach to life’s challenges, their will to react to problems instead of letting them get you down. So just read these words from HB guitarist, Frank “3-Gun” Novinec (buddy thank you for the nice words!)

1.First of all, I know you’re planning a huge amount of tour dates; will you hit Europe and maybe Italy?
YES, WE HAVE ALREADY BEEN CONFIRMING EUROPEAN FESTIVALS FOR THE SUMMER AND THAT WILL MEAN OFFDAYS AS WELL, SO I ASSUME WE WILL BE BACK IN ITALY. CHECK THE HATEBREED FACEBOOK OR HATEBREED.COM FOR UPDATES.

2. Besides the tour, are you also working in studios to record new tracks?
SLOWLY BUT SURELY WE ARE/WILL BE WORKING ON A NEW RECORD, YES. WE KNOW EVERYONE IS READY, WE APPRECIATE THE PATIENCE.

3. Even being one of the heaviest band at the moment on stage, I was suddenly impressed by the quality of your lyrics: far from the negative\death feeling of a lot of metal bands, and instead really positive, pushing oneself to always do his best and to never give up on life difficulties. Do you share this point of view? How do you get inspiration for your lyrics? Do you feel like “giving a positive message” to your fans?
I RELATE TO JAMEYS MESSAGES THE WAY THAT ANYONE CAN, AND WHAT I MEAN BY THAT IS THEY ARE VERY DIRECT, AND DEAL WITH REAL LIFE SITUATIONS. WE DONT SING ABOUT FANTASYLAND AND THINGS LIKE THAT, WE ARE NOT THAT BAND. I THINK THAT’S WHAT MAKES OUR FANS FEEL EMPOWERED AND ONE WITH THE BAND, BECAUSE THE LYRICS HIT SO CLOSE TO DEALING WITH THE HARDSHIPS WE GO THROUGH, GOOD TIMES AND BAD TIMES, AND LIFE IN GENERAL.

4.Hatebreed’s fans are both from the metal world and from the hardcore punk area. In fact your sound is strong and powerful but also really fast and punching. Did you really grow up as a band trying to mix influences from these 2 areas or it’s something that comes to you naturally due to the music you’re listening to and following?
WE ARE MUSIC FANS. ESPECIALLY FANS OF HARDCORE, PUNK ROCK, OI, METAL, AND ROCK. THESE ARE THE GENRES THAT WE ARE CARRYING THE FLAG FOR. ALWAYS HAVE, ALWAYS WILL. I DONT PARTICULARLY THINK THERE IS TOO MANY BANDS OUT THERE THAT CAN CLAIM THIS. SOMETHING WE ARE VERY PROUD OF.

5.I know Jasta is involved in a tons of side projects, can you please remember us some? And what about other band members?
JAMEY HAS KINGDOM OF SORROW (FEATURING KIRK FROM DOWN/CROWBAR), JASTA (HIS SOLO BAND), ICEPICK, (FEATURING LORD EZEC AKA DANNY DIABLO). CHRIS AND WAYNE HAVE “BLACKENED” AND CHRIS ALSO HAS THE HARDCORE “SUPERGROUP” S.O.S.

6.I heard a lot of talking about your religious behavior, I guess due to the fact your lyrics are really inspiring, but is that Hatebreed are really speaking somewhat about religion or not ?
WE LEAVE RELIGIOUS VIEWS UP TO EVERYONE ELSE, THAT’S SOMETHING WE DONT GET TOO INVLOVED IN. THAT IS A VERY TOUCHY SUBJECT AND WE FEEL “TO EACH THIER OWN” AS FAS AS IT’S CONCERNED.

7.Our webzine is focused over the “extreme sport” behavoiur, which often goes along with punk\hc attitude. Are you interested in any freestyle sports?
I AM A HUGE SPORTS JUNKIE!, I SPEND HOURS EVERYDAY WATCHNG NASCAR, NFL FOOTBALL , NBA BASKETBALL, AND MLB BASEBALL.

8.I think one of your most successful songs was “Doomsayer”. I can’t choose just one, but which of your songs reflects the “Hatebreed attitude” the most?
THERE’S SO MANY, ALL THE ANTHEMS I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THOUGH…”LIVE FOR THIS”, “I WILL BE HEARD”, ETC.

9.You have an amazing amount of fans over Facebook pages, twitter and don’t know what else. Are you directly behind these pages writing and updating?
WE ARE DEFINITELY “HANDS ON” WITH ALMOST EVERYTHING INVOLVING HATEBREED, WE TRY TO KEEP IT AS “INTIMATE” AS WE CAN, EVEN THOUGH IT IS VERY HARD AS YOU CAN IMAGINE.

Hi guys thx for being – again – in touch, this time to share some words and maybe discover something new on SWB. I’m pretty sure a lot of our readers known the full story – But anyway tell us, how did the Shake Well Before project started?

Hi, first of all we would like to thank you for this interview . The project started back in 2008 with Simone, Sbatta, Silvio and our previous guitarists Albi and Milo. We started with a mix of almost every genre that has nearly to do with metal. It was something between metalcore and nu metal, but we weren’t good at all at the beginning. Albi was the first one to leave the band because of his studies, then Milo. Sometimes it’s difficult to have a job and play in a band at the same time. We replaced them with Matteo, who played in tribute bands of Slipknot and Rammstein and Alessandro, who has lots of other projects like “My Hidden Phobia” and “Lisa Meets Jack”.

How did the name come out? What’s the meaning?
Actually there is no deeper meaning behind it. The idea came from our drummer Sbatta. We all had different music styles so our music was like putting different styles together, shake it and you have us. We decided to keep the name also after we changed genre.
Where you already playing in other bands and then gathered into the project? Or was it the kick start also for your musical experience?
SWB was the first band experience for Sbatta and Simone,our bassist. Matteo used to play in tribute bands and crazy black metal bands, Alessandro had lots of bands/projects and Silvio used to play in very small bands in Germany before he moved to Italy

How long have you been around since the beginnings? Can you remember any of the most relevant moments of the band? Maybe also including some old song title that people would listen too!
We played our first concert the 25th of April 2008 in Genoa. Right now we played around 50,may be 60 gigs around Italy. Normally the recording sessions are the most relevant moments because we get all together for a few days and make a lot of shit. We also recorded in Munich, Germany in the summer of 2009, that was awesome, we drank a lot of beer . But that feels like ten years ago, we changed everything, so there aren’t really old songs of us that can be relevant, may be a song called “This Butterfly Is A Dragon”, because we did a video for it. It was our first music video and the first video shot of Andrea Larosa of Ready,Set,Fall. Anyway we recorded 3 Eps with the old line up.

I really love your sound and it reminds me of a mix of death vocals, grind guitars and some HC tunes.. I mean, a lot of things contribute to create a nice and powerful sound. Maybe I’m pretty far from the right definition, but which are the bands SWB takes inspiration from?
You aren’t that far from the right definition I think. It’s just natural for us to do what we do but you can clearly hear inspirations from bands like As I Lie Dying, Parkway Drive, August Burns Red, may be also some Lamb of God or even Panthera.

I know it’s quite hard to have just ONE fav band. Do you also listen to “other things” ? From metalcore to hc? From melodic punk to electronic ?
We listen to a lot of other stuff from every genre…we listen to everything. From heavier stuff like Immortal and Oceano to commercial pop to country, jazz, rock, classic, dubstep, mathcore, ska…whatever, if it’s good, it’s just good, it doesn’t matter what genre.

I know you’re workin damn hard at the moment, what are your next projects?
We are working on our new EP recorded at Fusix Studio in Turin. A lot of good bands recorded there and the producer Andrea Fusini is just a Monster, what he did with our sound is just incredible. It will come out on itunes around January. The next step will be working on a new video clip and playing a lot of shows wherever we can. Then we only hope to be seen by somebody who trusts in us and wants to invest in this band to release a full album.

And what about tour dates? Are you planning something abroad too?
We will be on tour in GB from the 2nd to the 5th of January (London, Brighton, Oxford and Birmingham). It will be our first experience abroad and we are all very excited about it. Then we are planning to do other European tours through Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands and a trip to Russia and Hungary.

I have the feeling that metalcore is becoming more and more popular, eventually turning from the archetype of the “ugly and smelly” leather man playin’ Megadeth or Obituary (lol) to the cool guys tattooed that evey girl wants like Bring me The Horizon or A Day to Remember. Do you share this view? Do you think it’s a kind of evolution?
Yes, you’re right. Things changed and metalcore is becoming more and more popular and even more commercial. Metal is not anymore just about being sad, dark and dirty but being cool, having fun and doing a lot of shit around. We aren’t wearing dark clothes, studs, leather. We don’t have long hairs except of Matte, who is still living in the 80s (just joking).

We’re a board mag, so this one is mandatory, this kind of music is often related to sk8 videos and extreme sports. Have you ever been in touch with the action sports scene?
No, we are all very lazy…we love to see it on television but we don’t practice actively. The only sport we do is driving fast and getting a lot of speeding tickets.

Are you working on solo\side project at the moment?
Our guitarist Alessandro is working on an acoustic pop project called “Lisa Meets Jack”, you should check them out also if it’s not metal.

Another year passed, and another edition of Balla Coi Cinghiali is already over. The festival has been huge – as usual, and as everyone of you surely knows. Like in Woodstock, but with better food. Countless bands performed on the several stages in the different areas of the festival, and we want to show you a selection of the best images taken -and kindly offered- by a great local photographer, Lucy Casone – Luceviola.
