Ciao Michele!

Qual ‘è il tuo bike set up attuale?

Ho iniziato a fotografare grazie allo skate.

Come ti trovi a filmare?

Ciao Carlo!Ho 17 anni e vivo a Lugano, in Svizzera.

Personalmente scattando in raw do semplicemente una regolata a luci/ombre, contrasto, bilanciamento colore e curve.

Tu personalmente quale preferisci?

Seguite i suoi lavori su Flickr e 500px!

UnderExposure is our new section dedicated to emerging photographers and filmers. Words, pics, ideas, inspiration and stories told through the words and not only through pixels. There were a few names to choose from, and we decided Sergio Pontillo because he’s totally new on this mag and we’re a bit curious!

Hi Sergio, welcome on Candiesmag! It’s raining cats and dogs while I’m writing. Cool! Let’s make a quick intro to present yourself to our readers:
Hi, my name is Sergio Pontillo, I’m 20, I’m afraid of driving alone, I know some Italian cities better than the one where I live (Napoli) and I like cooking. Skateboarding is the source of all my satisfactions, successes and failures, thoughts and ideas of my last 7 years. I take pics from 5 years.

It’s strange how I run across your pics for the very first time. I bought a trigger Cactus V5, I took a look at the attached sample and I saw a beautiful skate pic made by an Italian.. and with an entry camera like the D60..I immediately looked for your profile on flickr and your pics were the best presentation possible. How did you pic arrived on that flyer? Do you still use the cactus triggers?
It was unusual for me too when an Italian wrote me for my pic on the Cactus flyer (and great too!) I’ve always used them since I bought my second flash. I used to use the v3 but after that publication they sent me a couple of v4s, and it’s what I’m using now.

Let’s going on with your equipment… The photographers’ backpacks are really heavy. What’s in yours? And most of all, what could never miss in your backpack before a shooting session?
My backpack is surely heavy: inside there are – besides a second pair of socks, laces and a seven of diamonds – a Nikon d60, a totally manual 50mm f1.4 and 35mm f2.8 Nikon, a 55-200mm Nikon, a fisheye Tokina 10-17mm, a Cactus v4s, 2 non-TTL flashes , an analogue compact Canon, colored jelly and other filters, a Sony TRV900 with fisheye, grip, batteries and extra minidv. Before every session I watch whatever clips with Ryan Ticknor, my favourite skater. It became quite a rite.

There’s always a story behind every photographer. Can you remember what was your first picture? Was it a random approach or a weighted one?
At the beginning I was using my father’s compact camera, just to take pics with family and friends. I’ve always loved keeping memory of my days, I think past is very important and it’s also the only sure and real thing we have I think my first skate picture was in the parking lot of the Centro Direzionale, I had my father’s old flash which couldn’t be synchronized with the camera, so I used to push the flash button with one hand and the camera with the other… the fastest fingers in the west.

You’re very young but with a great portfolio. What are the highlights in your career as photographer?
It’s funny how my few highlights come all from flickr! First of all the appearance on the Cactus flyer. Then the cooperation with a German brand of street culture (H1pnuz) – the guy came to Naples to shoot with the brand’s t-shirts. I made with a few others an advertising spot in stop motion for some watches. Three of my pics were published on 6:00am, and finally you

What can you tell us about your schooling? Did you take part to classes and courses or you learned it all by yourself?
DIY since the beginnings. I learned watching pictures on flickr, reading a lot on the web and taking tons of pics, experimenting and failing too. Last year I joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, the only school I attend with joy. So now I’m studying photography, cinema and tv.

A lot of photographers decide to specialize as videomakers and I know you realize some clips every now and then. Are they two complementary fields or you had to start from zero?
Surely they’re two very close fields. If you can take pics you can also shoot with a videocamera. With the new cameras you can even do it all with just one reflex. The coming of dslr in the field of skateboarding clips is a revolution. A lot of people criticize them because it’s deeply different from the combo vx1000 mk1. But in the right hands also a dslr can produce good clips, it’s simply another way of filming.

Your blog is great starting from the name: http://serialchillers.wordpress.com/ . Tell us something about it.
The name is an idea of my friend Antonio (Romanelli), the guy I run the blog with. Serial Chillers because we live skateboarding to the fullest without being trapped in the negativity and competitiveness of many other skaters. Skateboarding it’s not about how many stairs you can ollie or how many flips you can do, otherwise nobody could talk about skateboarding except Rodney Mullen. We think skateboarding is few but good friends, a pavement and beers with lemon

Besides skateboarding what are the other subjects you like capturing?
Faces, mouths, noses, eyes, eye circles, eyelashes, teeth, hair, scratches, smiles. I love photographing people, both the known and unknown ones.

Another subject I like is postproduction: yes/no/maybe. What do you think about photoshop, use and abuse, and about the complexity of a software which is often taken lightly even by the pros?
Like evey powerful thing, it can be good and bad. I hate the pictures with too much postproduction. I personally use it only to adjust contrast/level/curves, color balance and rarely to erase the rumor. I think that textures, flares and fake lights don’t make a picture better but simply more fake.

This was a year full of high tech news, with Nikon that tried to make FX filming accesible to everyone. Do you already know what you’ll buy in the future?
Nothing, but if I earn some money I’ll take the d600. I’m waiting for it by Nikon, a full frame that films too so I could use the 50 – my favourite lenses – to the fullest, I could film in HD for the Serial Chillers film and I could make sequences with the 5,5 fps I’m a bit upset cause Canon is superior in terms of filming…

What do you think about the fact that “everybody is a photographer nowadays?”
I really don’t care, everybody can do what he wants. What surprises me is the amount of young people who succeed into makin new and fresh things and nobody cares about them. On the magazines I see always the same few names, or people who’ve taken pictures for less than a year and they’re on a mag only because they’re with “famous” skaters.

How’s your arm? There’s a very important link between photographer and photographed subject. Do you think that a good photographer should be also a rider?
Now my arm is good enough to skate If you want to photograph skateboarding you have to be a skater, absolutely… otherwise you can’t capture a difficult trick in the right way, or an easy trick in the right place because you don’t understand it to the fullest. Somebody who doesn’t skate can’t see the difference between a trick and the other and this is evident in pictures where the skater is placed in the middle and you can’t see where does he come from neither where is he going…

Sergio thank you a lot for your time, last space is yours as usual:
Thank you for this interview Thanks to my family who always supported me in what I love doing, to all my friends who believe in me and I spend incredible days with, to Antonio Romanelli because he bought a pair of Janoski from his iPhone while he was with me in the hospital, to Vittorio Guglietta, Penni, Ed Templeton, Jackson Casey, Briggs Ogloff, Matt Price, Alex Burrell and everybody who inspires me with his art.

Abbiamo avuto l’occasione di scambiare due parole con Martino Prendini, co-creatore assieme ad Irene Tomaini del “laboratorio creativo”, cosi come loro stessi amano definire l’agenzia di comunicazione “Mary and the Teapot”.

Ciao Martino!

Come è nata in te l’idea di creare “Mary and the Teapot”?

Grazie a Martino, seguite i suoi lavori su http://www.maryandtheteapot.com/

Pachyderm 8.2 with trucks Venture 149, no comment on wheels and bearings.

Who did push you to skate?
My parents, they took me to Decathlon for my birthday and they told me I could have taken what I wanted in the roller area, but next to this there were the skateboards..

You traveled a lot this summer, which was the funniest moment for you?
I liked them all: Spring Classic, Un Tranquillo Weekend Da Paura, Zattoni’s vert, Habitat Skatepark, Genova, Bergamo…all awesome!

And among the others you even made two video parts. Did you edit them? Who helps you with the filming?
I edit, and I stop the first person I meet to film. If I’m in trouble I ask to Matte and Konrad, two pros in the field. I thank them for their patience

What does inspire you before skateboarding?
Good music, friends, a little bit of competition and obviously a skate video that suggests you the tricks to do everyday

What’s the skate video everyone should have at home?
There are a few, but surely “Almost – Cheese and Cracker”. It was one fo the first clips I watched and it affected me so much that my nickmane is now “the Italian Daewon Song”! I like it!

I assume that you like boned airs and fingerflips. What about your favourite tricks at the moment?
All in wallplant, fk bs no-comply 360 and all variations of blunt, above all blunt flip-in and halfcab blunt 360 shove-it to fk.

Projects for the next year? What are your goals?
I want to take part again to all contests and I’d like to balance skate, school, family, friends and girlfriend. I wanna learn a new trick every week, but it wouldn’t be bad to learn one per day

Thank you a lot Matte, just end it as you like it:
I thanks all my sponsors, my friends, especially Luca Fiora (who always come to the contests or skateboarding with me) and the boys of the Boarderline Crew (they always push me to do my best!) and in general all the people who support me.
If in these last few days you’ve visited our website the name David Ball won’t be new to you.
So after the Welcome to the Team with Action Style Clothing, we’ve decided to know a bit more about him!

1- Hi David, where are you from, how old are you and how long have you been skating?
Hi I’m 17 and I’m from Formigine a small town near Modena.
I’ve been skating for five and half years now.

2- Sponsors and hook ups?
I’m the Action Style Clothing team and I also ride for Paul’s Boutique, the local skateshop!

3- How did you first start skating? What made you realize it woudn’t have been just a simple hobby?
When i was in primary school the city council built a little skatepark in my town and I was amazed about it. During the middle school I decided to try, and since the first day I’ve never stopped.
So basically it has never been just a simple hobby for me: I remember I used to quit everything just to go out and skate on the streets, often on my own.

4- Where do you skate usually? Have you got a favourite spot?
I live near Modena so during the week I usually go at the local skatepark called “le gobbe”, but in the week-ends I always go in other parts of Italy to skate.
I like skating everything: ledges, bowls, rails, banks…Actually I haven’t got a favourite spot but I must say that Milan is my favourite city to skate ! There are so many good spots to skate and they’re all different! With the subway you can pass from the “Lambro” bowl to the manny pads of “La Barona”.
I come from a very small town, so Milan seems a wonderfull place to me, but maybe the view of the city is different for someone that lives there every day!

5- How are you getting on with the Action Style team? Are you working on some new projects with ‘em?
In the Action Style team I’m getting on ever so well! The brand is super core and the guys are amazing people: they work really hard on everything they do, this because they aren’t only interested in promoting their brand, but they also care about bringing up their team riders!
Now my first video part is out as well as the first photos. To me these are all starting points, not arrivals! All this is just a big motivation to improve my skating every day! In the next months I’ll keep producing footage: photos and lots and lots of filming!

6- Have you got a favourite trick? Which trick are you working hard on instead?

I like all kind of tricks I can’t do, this because I wanna learn ‘em!
On transitions I’m trying fs flip to disaster, damn that trick!
On ledges I’m trying fs five-o to fs board 270 out. I’m starting to hate it because it’s a weird trick: you need to turn all your weight opposite from the start.
I always come up with strange ideas…

7- What do you think about the skate scene here in Italy? What’s you opinion about contests, skateparks and events?

Good question! I’ve noticed that the scene is starting to grow quite a lot. There’s still a lot to do to be able to compete decently with the other european scenes. Well the typical Italian mentality doesn’t help much: everyone’s just interested in watching football and the “Veline” show on tv!
Another big problem are the city councils: in my personal experience after years of compromises and projects the results have been less then nothing. Now we’re going to star some DIY projects because we need something decent to skate and to improve with!
I personally like competions, eaven if lots of people complain about the CIS saying it’s all put up.
I like the CIS, it’s a good way to improve and to meet new friends from all the country!

8- Talking about competions, will you show up at them this year?

Of course! I’ve taken part at lots of local contest but I’ve also been at competions in Brescia, Imperia, Andora, Genova, Carrara, Lido Camaiore, Seregno, Tarvisio and I’ve also started the CIS this May!
I love competions they’re a funny mess around and you always end up metting new friends at the end of the day!

9- How do you spend time when you’re not out there grinding benches?
I skate everyday and when I’m not at school I skate from morning to night.
If it rains I usually go with my friends in some indoor car-parks with some small ledges and rails that fit in my friend’s car!
If I’m injured I usually listen to punk music, watch movies or read…
I often go to my girlfriend in Milano. She’s the only thing I care about in life beside skateboarding!

10- This last space’s free. Finish this ITW as you want!
I’d like to thank:
Action Style Clothing, Nicola and Daniele of Paul’s Boutique, my father for all his support, Roberta, my brother and my mother for all the lifts at the skatepark and at the train station, Oskar my awesome filmer, Alle, Dennys, Mozz and all the locals of the”Gobbe” for all the sessions we have togheter, the Casalgrande crew, Jack and all the guys of the Firewall Skatepark in Imperia, the local skaters of Rho Park, Giovanna, Gio delfino, everyone I’ve met at the contests and my love, Gaia, that always gives me the strenght to do my best in life.

Cheers!!!

Yeah David follow him and Action Style on actionstyleclothing.com/

Yes, finally I met my fb friend Fabrizio Ara during a Red Bull surf and skate contest in Badesi, west Sardinia. Nice and smart guy, I saw him first waiting for a lift to the start of a downhill session and it was like if we knew in person from a long time. We chatted for a while, I was there expressly to take this interview, he was changing the wheels at his new Bombsquad board, a little bit nervous about the incoming contest.

After few runs and many pictures, the first thing I noticed was that Fabrizio enjoys skating and chilling with friends, embodying the right way of life that you can expect from a skater.
He is only 24, but looks younger, although he is really focused on what he looks for…

Longboarding since only two years, he actually collaborates with Wipeout Boardshop, Riptide, Surf Rodz and Bombsquad, showing good skills both in sliding and bombing and a particular talent in taking videos and pictures of what he does on the asphalt. Always looking for new partnerships to get the aim of being one of the first pro longboarders in Italy, Fabrizio – aka “Bibi” – produces a lot of attractive images and videos, showing at the same time equipment and skills, with his team mates and the riders that often meets during skate trips and contests.

On the tube everyone can see video clips like “Longskate Arbus: Shut Up and Ride” (actually the most watched) or Longskate Arbus – Bomborn”.
One of the most recent videos seen on his fb page was about a young guy, Marco Garau, a green talent growing to collect the passion of his “instructor”; “he is my pupil, I only skate with him, I want to bring him to the top” told me Fabrizio. Good luck and Good job!

One year ago mr. Ara also founded Longskate Arbus, an association made to collect longskate lovers in south Sardinia trying to promote this amazing sport in a country – Italy, I mean – where, sadly, only soccer is considered, by a huge percentage of people. Now, after many contests, broken bones, worn wheels, pictures ad video clips I can say that thanks to guys like Fabrizio, Sardinia is one of the most involved places in Italy with a lot of youngsters trying to learn as soon as possible all the secrets to bomb and shred down the sickest lines.

Giuseppe Cabras

A damn fine bmx rider, a nice person to talk with, we had the luck to share a few question with Federico Saoner. Check out!

Hi Fede! Welcome on Candiesmagazine.com! Introduce yourself, how old are you, where are you from and how long have you been riding?

Hi, I’m Federico, I’m 18 and I come from Milan. I’ve been riding for three years.

Sponsors and hook-ups?

My sponsors are Frontocean and Osiris.

How did you become a bmxer? Can you recall the moment when you realized it was something more than just a hobby?

3 years ago my dad took me on a biking day in Milan, where I met a few riders. And it all began. Now bmxing is way more than a hobby for me, it’s my way of life. I couldn’t live more than 3 days without riding ahah

What does bmx mean to you?

Bmx means everything to me. Without it I wouldn’t know what to do. I guess.

Where do you usually ride? Do you have any favourite spot (not necessarily near home)?

I usually ride Lambro or some of Milan’s street spots with my crew. I like Centale because there are tons of walls perfect for combos and so on.

You’re the hero of the last Enel TV spot. I’m curious. How did it happen that such a big company, so far from the action sports, chose a bmxer for its spot, and how did they come to choose you? Was it a good experience?

A friend of mine told me there was a casting in Milan to find a good bmxer. I showed up and a week later they called to tell me that I had been chosen for the spot. It was a great experience and it doesn’t happen everyday to be the protagonist of a spot!! I was very happy to do that.

What did it happen to your missing tooth?

Unluckily I had a slam in June 2011. It wasn’t my fault, another rider hit me while I was dropping! It took me a month to recover, and soon I’ll have a new tooth.

Are you working on any video projects?

Yes I’m starting to work on my new edit and maybe I’ll shoot it in Barcelona. Soon we’ll also shoot a clip with my crew, the M.B. from Milan.

What do you think about the bmxing scene in Italy? Is it growing or not?

The Italian scene is growing very slowly. It’s better than the past, but we’re still far from the other countries.

What are you going to do this summer? Contests, trips, holidays?

I’m in a tour through all the pool parties in Italy until September. Then I’ll go to Barcelona for a few months!

Pictures and clips don’t show how hard it is to be noticed in the competitive world of the freestyle sports. Did bmx lead you to give up anything in your life?

Yes I made a lot of sacrifices. 2 years ago I left school to focus almost entirely to bmx. The level is really high now but with commitment you can do everything!

How do you spend your days when not riding?

Sometimes I swim, or I go out with my friends…

Where do you take inspiration for a riding day?

I watch some videos, I relax and then I’ve fun with the others in street!

Thanks a lot for your time Fede! You can add whatever you want:

Thank you for the itw! Have fun..!!
