X Games 15 – the pictures

The X Games have come a long way since modified snow shovel racing and bungee jumping, but here at Winter X 15, the Games have finally found their groove and proven they’re here to stay with an all-time attendance record of 114,200 spectators over the course of the 4 day event. Here’s a quick recap of what went down in and around town during Winter X 15, and a look at the achievements of the Red Bull athletes

In a carbon copy of the 2010 results, Kaya Turski again brought home gold and Grete Eliassen brought home bronze in the Women’s Skiing Slopestyle event. With access to sleds, a foam pit, and other resources provided by injured rider Levi Lavallee, Daniel Bodin broke his podium curse and won gold in the Snowmobile Freestyle final.

After a brutal crash on his first run, Simon Dumont returned to post a leading score on Run #2, but in the end Dumont earned a bronze medal for his solid efforts in Men’s Skiing Superpipe finals.

With two huge big air wins already this season, 18-year old upstart from Montreal Sebastien Toutant secured a silver medal in the Men’s Snowboard Big Air competition with tricks including a front 10 double cork.

Australian Russ Henshaw, who qualified first for the Slopestyle finals, pulled out a silver medal in the Men’s Skiing Slopestyle finals with both left and rightside double cork 1260′s Reigning champ Bobby Brown grabbed the silver medal in the Skiing Big Air finals, an astounding feat considering he injured himself earlier in the day in the Slopestyle competition.

With creative tricks in the rail section and both regular and switch spin combinations on the jumps, Finnish upstart Enni Rukajarvi rode away with a gold medal in the Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle finals, becoming the first Winter X rookie in 14 years to win this event.

It was Canadian domination in the Men’s Snowboard Slopestyle competition as Sebastien Toutant and Mark McMorris stood side-by-side on the podium with gold and silver medals respectively.

Sweden’s own Daniel Bodin claimed his second gold medal of the Games with a huge double grab backflip in the Snowmobile Best Trick competition.

Shaun White wrapped up X Games 15 by making history once again, becoming the only person to ever win four consecutive gold medals in the Snowboard Superpipe.

Canadian Sebastien Toutant was also named the Jeep Men’s Athlete of the X Games, taking home a sweet brand new Jeep to go with his two medals.
